That was a great twist, didn’t really think about it literally until he slipped up and said he was sorry for hurting Laura Linney’s neck. I’m so surprised they just let the ending be so depressing, no one wins except the apparent psychopath that is Roy. Richard Gere’s character surely will never be able to trust or choose to see the good so easily again after this. 

Frances McDormand was fantastic, Richard Gere was a lot of fun, and Norton certainly made a name for himself with a noticeable amount of control and range in his acting. 

Thinking back, it’s not like this movie had a ton of scenes that I loved or that immediately spring to mind, it all just mostly felt cohesive and like it was meant to: a thrilling and intriguing ride through the pitfalls of moral judgement and the ever prevalent feeling that someone is hiding something. 

Would’ve been nice if Gere’s character wasn’t so perfect other than coming off pompous or narcissistic (and even then apparently his heart is made of gold) sometimes, but he was still a fun protagonist to view the story through. 

Just remembering the scene when they catch that one dude that tells them about the tape and they’re like interrogating him and he keeps trying to run away halfheartedly. That shit was pretty funny, dude was not acting his ass off.

All in all it was just a very enjoyable experience and story to be along for the ride for. Even with the stunning ending leaving the whole thing as basically pointless, a misguided merry-go-round to save a killer that did actually do it, it still felt well told and well acted and well written, and like that ending was acceptable, which is weird. I usually wouldn’t like some big twist ending that sort of negates a character’s arc, but when you think about it, Gere’s character always did just assume that human goodness is a core trait (as he tells that reporter) and he fought for Aaron’s innocence so hard because he believed him to be innocent. With all the questions throughout the film being asked about what to do when you’re representing someone who you know is guilty, having Gere represent someone whom he thinks is innocent but is actually just great at hiding he’s guilty is a really fun idea. So I guess that’s why it works.

Just not the best film experience I’ve ever sat through. Martin Sheen and Christopher Walken had some really fun moments, loved when Walken smashed that vase with the cane and told the dad the damn ice was gonna break. also a couple really poignant moments, like the doctor not talking to his long-lost mother after getting in touch with her via Walken because it “wasn’t meant to be” without his help. But by that logic, it was meant to be because Walken existed and helped him in the first place. Whatever. 

There were some things that just happened as everything moved along where it was like woah, okay? Already? Similar to the endings of some scenes, even the ending of the film, nothing was allowed to just let linger and breathe. and also his mom just dies out of nowhere from seeing her son have some troubles with a reporter on tv? Oh ok Walken’s ex-girl is just spending Christmas and having a day’s worth of sex with him once more before returning to her husband? One more time for old time’s sake?

Still, through everything, was mostly entertaining. Did get somewhat bored but I don’t know, it did enough. I’m definitely underwhelmed for a Cronenberg and Stephen King crossover. 

Major cheese factor overall for the film, but it feels like that’s just part of when it was made. 

The little rich boy Walken tutors is so adult-like, it’s weird. He reminds me of a Skyrim Wood Elf.
WHY did Dodd decide to kill himself like that.

Anyway, very mid movie. Walken does have acting chops. The doctor is a very calming presence and I thought he and Walken really got along and showed a fun bond and comfort growing between them. 5.7/10 movie, could’ve been worse, but it had a charm to it.

Some moments. Just didn’t really make me feel anything at all. The attempts at commentary with the political speeches was a cool idea, how the underbelly of America moves in contrast to the guiding words of its political leaders and commentators. But just eh. The slow mo up close shots were very cool as well, the color grading/overall feeling of the cinematography added a gritty and bleak sense to it all.

Wow.

Exceptionally well done. Great performances, great usage of different medias, I loved how the child character was developed and utilized, all of it was incredible to me.

Will come back to this later, but honestly a solid 9.7/10.

Solid, and quite touching at many moments. Even shed some tears a couple times. Quippy as hell which apparently is a lot like the book (which I did not read), but that’s to be expected with Gosling being the lead. The run time was definitely a tad long, and some of the music was cheesier than hell, but the redeeming factors far outweighed the slight issues I had with the film. 

Kind of feels like if Marvel made the Martian, but I think it’s a disservice to compare it so heavily to other blockbuster space movies. This film really was all about coming together to take on a common enemy/problem, sacrifice for something larger than yourself, and having enough bravery and courage to be someone more than you think you are. I don’t think either Interstellar or The Martian did as good a job of touching on and expanding these themes as Project Hail Mary does, even if they themselves focused pretty heavily on those ideas as well. But that sentiment is definitely debatable.

Typing this out it seems like this movie did nothing new, but really I don’t think it needed to. It was still a great movie experience without having to break down any walls or be especially original.

That was interesting. On the one hand, the performances from Day-Louis and Sean Bean are exceptional, especially the scene when Jem first arrived at Ray’s house. The tension was palpable, the facial expressions and exchanges without the use of any words were masterfully done, you could feel the massive amounts of history and seemingly guilt, as well as some sort of power dynamic that you’re eager to understand the origin of.

On the other, once you realize what the film is about, that being redemption for past trauma and grappling with the things that were or weren’t your fault and stepping up for the people you care about no matter what, the mystique of the film seemed to wash away over the rest of the run time, once you drew closer to a conclusion that already seemed set in stone, even with Ray being so scarred, stubborn and “pig ignorant.” The shots and general cinematography were wonderful (though a few maybe lingered too long for me), the performances of course are incredible, the music and sound design were so huge and triumphant at some points while haunting and slightly dissonant at others which really accomplished a unique mood for the film, there were so many great parts of this film. And yet I just kind of got bored, because I knew that he was going to find that redemption (and in the end he goes for it). This was a film exploring topics and feelings that I feel so familiar with, that I feel like I’ve seen done many times before, though maybe never this subtle or nuanced or artistic. 

I don’t know. Upon first viewing, it’s a solid film with some incredible elements, but it’s just missing that je ne sais quoi. Maybe knowing what to expect next time I watch will change the viewing experience for the better, but I kind of doubt it. I really wanted to like this one. 6.8/10

Definitely a very fun movie that I will undoubtedly like more upon second viewing. I loved loved loved how the film ends on the shot of the data center constructed and unhindered by all of the personal drama and vendettas undertaken by our cast of characters. The city was so bent out of shape with its own set of problems, some of which were completely created/blown out of proportion by characters like Mia, that it couldn’t prevent the slow invasion of the data center which will certainly have negative effects on the town in the coming years. They lost the forest for the trees.

7/10 for some slower moments in the pacing, but I don’t know how much was actually unnecessary to keep in after first viewing. Still a really solid and well-told story that seemed to show the logic behind each of the many sides’s decisions, but also their shortcomings. None of the many groups were fully in the right or wrong. And in the end, Dawn ends up in a beautiful home with an apparently prestigious public position, if the end is any giveaway. So ironic that the “crazy lady” of the movie ends up in a better spot than most everyone. RIP Butterfly, I bet Michael makes things even somehow after the run-time finishes.

Well, that’s the worst a movie has made me feel in a while. Fantastic performances all around, and just great execution from a story and cinematographic perspective. Extremely poignant with such little run-time (obviously). Ari Aster knows how to do it.

Hope this guy makes more movies!!!!

Cerebral, darkly funny, and very distinct characters. Was fun as an audience member to try to do the spy’s job of decoding all the layered dialogue and intent. Slow-burn type for sure but I had a really great time with this one, the stylistic choices (cinematography, score, lighting, color grading, shot pacing) were overall very cohesive feeling, while also not falling into any stereotypical or tired territory; the overall vibe that those choices all came together to evoke was very effective for me and in my opinion the genre of the movie, which seemed to be straight espionage and relationship drama.

By the way, was everyone cheating on everyone in this movie? Other than the Fassbender and Miss Cate, I suppose, but everyone else needs to treat therapy like something more than simply meeting a mandate.

7.8/10, but I could honestly see this raising or lowering upon another watch. Definitely a worthwhile viewing experience.

I don’t know how this could ever be construed as not an anti-war film when the suffering and madness of war are the lifeblood of this movie. There was nothing glorifying about war in this movie, as I’d been led to believe there would be from past bits and pieces I’d heard about this film. War is the great equalizer, and seemingly gives advantages for those who can act and think wickedly and without any sense of empathy. 

I thought the tension was built masterfully numerous times throughout, and it played with your expectations as well, especially with Barnes and Taylor at the end, when Taylor has finally reached that breaking point (Barnes did try to kill him for Christ’s sake) and shoots Barnes before he can mock Taylor for not really being a killer. But he just needed the opportunity, and an even more personal reason. 

Killing Elias so early on in the film did suck since he was my favorite character, but there was such a great ensemble effort that it still was fine, plus the stakes were constant throughout due to the nature of the material: the threat of death is constantly imminent in war, and is especially unpredictable in the jungles of Vietnam and Cambodia. I wish that it wasn’t telegraphed so easily for what was going to happen between Barnes and Elias once Elias had gone off on his own and Barnes said that he would go retrieve him. Like, I’m not sure how else exactly they would’ve constructed a situation for that, but it felt a bit too inorganic and lined up too well.

There’s some 80s action movie cheese to this thing, but I think the main messages and the horrors of war come across well enough to outperform the cheesiness of say a Charlie sheen voiceover or somewhat laughably evil characters like Bunny. 

I think upon another watch I won’t be giving this a 5 star rating, but as of just watching it for the first time, I thought it was extremely effective in the environment and feel of the war, and that the message wasn’t horribly ham-fisted so that it all felt preachy. No one really won in this movie, and of course, that’s the opposite of the point. The point is to show the intrinsic suffering and inhumanity of what is such a “necessary” arch of civilization and peace-keeping, which people everywhere take pride in participating in. War.

You can only hope you get more Elias’s than Barnes’s to be in the Platoon that your life depends on. Maybe then you’ll make it home to grandma.

Really fun ride. Don’t have a lot to say, really. The main cult leader was laughably evil, but I didn’t think it took away from anything. Was nice to see him and all of the rest of the cult die at the hands of Red, so the goal as a revenge movie was completed. Very hypnotic ride overall, but man the main girl had a very off putting vibe. And why did she lock eyes with Jeremiah for soooooo long.

Very interesting ride. The themes aren’t exactly clear to me as of first watch. I understand that it’s about money and power and control, but it feels nuanced. Maybe this is about how vulnerable creatives are forced to do things that reject and dismantle their past selves? James’s character was obviously toyed with by this group of rich people the entire time, and it seemed to be simply for their own amusement, but also James stays at the resort in the end? Does he feel he can’t go back to his past life, among normal people? Does he feel altered in a way that can’t be undone? 

One small addition that I thought was interesting was after the first execution of himself, I think James was starting to smile before the camera cut. I think James likes the thought of being reborn and having traits that his past self didn’t possess, like actually feeling powerful or accomplished, two things that he seemingly never really felt. 

How in the world did Em blame James for sitting there and watching the execution of himself? What did she want him to possibly do? Yeah James had a major backslide throughout the course of this film, but Em also wasn’t the greatest partner in turn. Another note on this is that it seems even before everything really turned sideways that James wanted Gabi, and to be out of his old life for good. I think James secretly wanted a new start.

Also, was James the one that hid his own passport? The movie seemingly tells us that when he goes to grab it from underneath the toilet.

Maybe the real question you’re supposed to wonder the whole time is if James is still the real, original James in the end. 

The extreme closeups are so uncomfortable as well, everyone is exposed, whether they’re comfortable with that or not. 

Maybe it’s all about self-doubt and guilt, thinking that you’re not worthy of being in the presence of such lavish people and locations due to your limited talent or whatever else.

Overall, cause I gotta wrap this up, I really enjoyed this, and I think I would enjoy it even more on a second viewing. 

but why the hell did James stay at the resort instead of taking his flight back in the end?

A fun time. Some weird choices due to its age, the music seemed very odd for some moments, and the acting and staging made it feel a bit silly at times. But the core feeling of the film is great. The premise as well is a bit silly, sending one officer over to check this out, but it doesn’t matter all that much.

First off, that’s one of the most explosive endings in film I’ve ever seen. The whole story truly did feel like you were falling, but I had no idea how we’d land. The hostility in this film is palpable, even between the main trio, but you can feel it bubbling under the surface for the entire runtime. It feels like there is such a disconnect between how the main three and the people they hang around see the world versus the police or other laymen. No one is without disdain, either toward someone or utilized as a weapon to protect themselves. 

The countdown technique works wonderfully in this film, as there are so many high-tension moments where you feel like the proverbial shit is going to hit the fan. It felt pre-destined, almost, but also it felt that these men became accomplices in some of their misfortune, as they, particularly Vinz, had become reckless due to the hate built up from witnessing the injustices they and their community suffers clouding their vision and preventing them from knowing when to back down. So many close calls that could’ve been the end of their stories much sooner than the runtime. 

One hangup I have is why in the world did Hubert and Saïd let Vinz out of their sight in the mall? The dude had been talking about if Abdel died then he definitely was going to even the score and take out a pig himself, so how could you let him be alone right after he found out that Abdel had indeed passed? That really made zero sense to me, no matter how late in the night or how long the day was, they should’ve had him in their sight at all times. 

I can’t wait to rewatch this film, I feel like there are some themes that I’m missing and haven’t explored enough, but that’s enough writing as my nose is so stuffed that I’m having trouble breathing. Something I didn’t even notice all that much while watching the film, which is huge. If a movie is so gripping that you forget about your sick symptoms for a while, it’s a good fucking movie. 9.5/10 but could very well be a 10 on rewatch. I just want to try to understand the actions of the main trio more, although I feel like Hubert’s character was really fleshed out well and I got to clearly understand his motivations, and I really respected how he acted in the biggest times of strife and tension in the film, particularly when involving Vinz.

100% recommend, but be ready for a bleak reality and a lingering cynicism. Hate is everywhere, but the most hateful thing someone can do is knowingly and willfully spreading it.

That was absolutely insane, I could not believe what I was seeing for the last thirty minutes and I spent the majority with my jaw on the floor. A rollercoaster doesn’t really begin to describe it, it was so distinct and unique and colorful and there was so much effort and care that went into every single shot. The props, the editing, the cinematography choices, the makeup team (holy shit), the numerous sets, the digital effects; every part of this could have won an award (and hopefully will). It was so quick and explosive at moments yet at others it slowly toiled along, letting you feel the physicality of its body horror and repulsiveness. The absurdism throughout is what made it a lot more enjoyable for me as well, if the tone were more self-serious I really don’t think this movie works but because the writing was so cohesive with that idea in mind and of course the direction from Coralie Fageat, it draws you in as an audience member in a way that I can’t really describe upon first viewing. This world asks you to just go with it, and I love that as well because that’s how you have the most fun viewing it. Like, we never get any insight as to who hands out the substance or how it was made, but it simply doesn’t matter, you’re not worried about those types of things. 

I would have a lot more to say on second viewing I bet, but I don’t really want to try to critique it at all right now. It was just a lot of fun and a fantastically memorable film.

A beautiful, simple yet deceivingly complex film. I don’t know why I loved this movie as much as I do, but it really struck a chord with me. This feels like an important film.

Kieran Culkin deserves all the awards and recognition for this role. He completely became the character and showed the massive depth behind someone that everyone seemingly wants to be, upon first meeting him.

There’s a lot to unpack here, and the main thought upon first viewing is what the fuck, but I know that there is a lot of underlying messaging that I was too bewildered by trying to stay up with all the crazy shit happening in the plot to really focus on. It seems like our protagonist, Alexia, was always kind of a little shit, is my takeaway supposed to be that the only way she’d find comfort and trust and a desire to not kill other people again is if someone gave her unwavering support and love?

Why was the guy who got blown up shown for a brief second during the last dance scene when Alexia wasn’t even present at the time of her “dad” blowing him up? How exactly did she have sex with that car? That question doesn’t exactly matter but I would be lying if I said it wasn’t in my head throughout the film. And probably the biggest elephant in the room, why did she begin to be attracted to vehicles after the accident? I can’t tell if it’s because of the people around her presumably not giving her what she needs, but her family did not seem to be uncaring in any capacity. Again, she was always a little rude and annoyed the dad on purpose which lead to the pivotal accident. Is her attraction because she was blended with the titanium and in some way “became” part machine, losing a part of her humanity and gaining a bond with metal? I just don’t know.

Why does she dislike and stand apart from humans so drastically when it’s not clear in the film that anyone impacted her negatively? I for the life of me can’t remember a time in the film that shows mistreatment from others or some other reason for her disdain toward other people. What made her want to kill in the first place? Obviously that first kill with the guy leaning into the car kind of deserved it (not really but at least it’s closer lol), but she seemed to take some amount of joy or at least felt some obligation to kill. Throughout the whole film, I never really wanted to root for her (which is fine, you don’t have to root for or like your protagonist, but in my opinion you should be able to understand some of their thinking and reasoning for acting how they do), and it was definitely hard to connect with her emotionally at any point because she felt so alien and unpredictable, I didn’t really know what she wanted or desired other than cars. Truly, what did she enjoy from life? And damn, last question, why was she biting that girls nipple so hard? I was thinking about them being closest on the human body to like lug nuts or screws but that’s a wild stretch. Shit looked so painful though.

Overall, like a 7.5. Really well-made and fun to watch because I was so taken aback the whole time, but there were a lot of parts that didn’t make much sense to me. And that’s okay.

Horrifying film. The pacing drives home the fact that this is just another school day for everyone except Dylan and Eric. Every student has their own problems, their own passions, their own struggles that each of them are fighting everyday through, getting through the slog of just another day for it all to mean nothing in the end because two kids decided everyone else needed to die for them to “have fun.” 

The authenticity of everything made the movie all the more terrifying. The sound design is absolutely impeccable, and can be extremely haunting, especially when following Dylan. This felt like a real school with kids just being kids, trying to make it through the day, and the sound design played a major role in that. 

One of the scarier aspects has to be the lack of emotional depth that Dylan has. Basically nothing makes him happy other than other people suffering (at this far-gone point in his mental state), and his main emotions are either disgruntlement with how he’s treated by others or pure stoicism/detachment. I’ve heard whispers that Nihilism was an impact on his mental state, and I can definitely see it. Nothing matters to him, not even Eric’s life. It matters so little that he’ll be the one to take it. The only time that Dylan is in any sort of distress is when he realizes (seemingly, maybe there’s a different reason for his dismay) that not all of his bombs went off and that most people have already evacuated, so he doesn’t get to kill anymore. Purely monstrous. 

Benny’s character leaves me a bit baffled. Why was he so very calm? He saw the carnage, was he simply in shock as he wandered leisurely through the hallways? Why didn’t he make more of an effort to tackle Eric when he had the jump on him? I digress.

Overall, a humanizing and haunting film that will leave every viewer with a feeling of dread given the fact that there are people like this out there, and acts like this will be committed again, and you can never know when. Let’s all try to be a bit more like John.

One of the perfect films ever. Some odd moments and shots were kept in, as well as some of the characters acting absolutely strange, but that adds to the charm and helps there to be at least a smidge of distance for the audience, in my opinion.

Fuck Hitler and everything he stood for, as well as those that tag onto hateful ideals once they become socially acceptable, or at least negligible/invisible to the majority of people. You are just as responsible as those with the power to push things over the edge.

This series goes to show that it doesn’t matter how many good and honest people you have working in a system or under a government, it matters tenfold more how corrupt and prideful the people at the top pulling the strings are, and what they’re willing to do to save their own reputation and standing. Akimov and Toptunov were screwed from the very beginning because Dyatlov was put in charge of the test. and of course because the night shift took on the test without being told about it whatsoever.

Jarrad Harris was exceptional as Legasov, as well as Skarsgard and Emily Watson really taking control of their characters. Every single character felt genuine and mostly fleshed out (save for a few). 

I certainly would’ve liked to see Gorbachev’s reaction to Legasov’s testimony, but I thought the ending was nearly perfect, and the use of the beginning as a foretelling of what we’d see was an intelligent secondary (to the linear story yet to come) way of keeping me intrigued. 

Overall, incredible. 9.7/10

A beautiful film.

genuinely very funny

Soundtrack was so incredibly poor. Completely ruined some scenes and it made sense why a lot of it didn’t have much music cause it should’ve just had none and might’ve even been better off. Felt like a Netflix movie all around, though there were definitely some tear jerking moments which while effective unfortunately ended up feeling way too gratuitous at points. Still, not the worst movie ever and of course is incredibly touching. Thought there were some nice visuals at times too, though the overall cinematography felt mostly uninspired and artificial. Worth a watch, no pun intended.

Would’ve been at least four and a half and maybe even five stars if the camera work wasn’t done like an episode of glee. The crazy zooms and pans and rapidness of the camera ruined some otherwise emotional moments, but even still it was not very hard to look past since the rest of the film is so well-done. Brody’s performance is incredible. The ending was out of nowhere and very abrupt, but it still certainly brought on goosebumps due to its poeticism. Lots more to say about the film, but it requires more than one viewing.

Very innovative filmmaking and storytelling. Some complicated characters.
Beautiful scenery and cinematography.

One of my fave feel-good movies I’ve ever seen. Fantastic cast with Steve Carrell, Greg Kinear, Toni Collette, and Paul Dano who definitely elevated this movie to the status I regard it at. The end pageant scene brought happy tears to my eyes, and I somehow came around to like the father by the end of it all.

Just like the yellow van, you can’t stop when you’re going; you just have to keep moving.

Absolutely soul crushing movie that has a sense of impending “doom,” for lack of a better term, throughout. I do wish the editing didn’t jump through time so much as it seems like we as the viewer miss a lot of important events, but other than that this was a fantastic film. Madds Mikkelsen is easily one of my favorite actors and he shows why in this film. So expressive without needing to overdo his facial movements or intonation.

The deeper you delve into the meanings of the form of the film and the characters and props and events that happen, the more perfect it becomes. The predator looks incredible fully flared out, and it’s a nice touch it looks like an old fashioned camera too. Hollywood and the allure of fame and spectacle eats every one up and not only spits them out, it fucking shits them out. Metal.

Was really satisfying to see Tubby get shotgunned in the stomach tho, if only briefly since it gets rewinded like 30 seconds after it happened.

One of the most horrific, sickening, hard-to-watch first hour I’ve watched in film. There is no scene that will change the way you think about a subject like Irreversible’s rape scene. Not a single cut, still camera, and extremely grotesque language and violence throughout. Noé crushes your hope even further when you see someone in the background of the shot see what’s happening, and then just leaves, and nothing comes of it. Her fate has already been sealed as the audience has seen, along with the ripples which resulted from it, including an innocent man brutally murdering someone in the name of revenge when it wasn’t even the right person. The use of the reversal of chronological events is so extremely bitter with just the tiniest hint of sweet, seeing the love and care the couple had for each other before that night, and even the fact that she was carrying a child through all of it. Truly a film which showcases in full display the despicable nature of rape and assault, but also in a way which I believe is totally necessary to get across how atrocious the acts themselves are.
