How a mix breathes
(This is an example post so you can see the layout. Delete it, or rewrite it as your own.)
The records I return to have one thing in common: they let the quiet parts be quiet. Not as a gimmick — as a structural choice. When a chorus finally opens up, it only lands because the verse held something back.
The part I notice now
Since I started paying attention to sound for a living, I can’t un-hear compression. A wall-to-wall loud master flattens the emotional contour of a song into a single unbroken shout. It’s exhausting in a way that isn’t about volume.
A few things I keep listening for:
- Where the transients survive. A snare that still cracks tells me someone protected the top end.
- Room. Even a dry mix has a sense of place. The great ones make the place feel intentional.
- What’s missing. The confidence to leave a bar with just bass and voice.
More to come. This section is where music notes will live.
